It’s often said that a look speaks louder than a thousand words. Whether it’s a killer look, piercing eyes, or doe-like eyes, there are countless ways to convey a message with a single blink.
That is why the eye area is a key feature of the eyes.
Dark circles, which are often accompanied by puffiness, can appear in older people or those with genetic predispositions…
Although fatigue seems to be the most logical explanation for the appearance of dark circles under the eyes, there are many other factors that can contribute to them.
In this article, learn about the different types of dark circles and the various treatments available to address them.
Colored eye circles
The main causes of dark circles under the eyes are genetic and, in some cases, hereditary.
The area under the eyes may appear purple or bluish in people with fair skin, because the skin there is so thin that the underlying veins are visible.
It’s worth noting that lack of sleep (fatigue) increases venous congestion, which in turn makes dark circles even darker.
People with darker skin produce additional pigment around the eyes, which can cause dark circles.
Dark circles under the eyes can be caused by allergies (such as pollen in the spring), hyperpigmentation (when the body produces extra melanin), or frequent rubbing of the eyes.
Finally, red circles under the eyes are caused by poor blood circulation.
Each type of dark circle has its own treatment:
- For blue or purple under-eye circles, hyaluronic acid is used to plump up the thin skin in this area and make the veins causing the discoloration less visible.
- For red under-eye circles, we use a vascular laser to remove the blood vessel(s) responsible for the redness.
- As is often the case with hyperpigmentation, chemical peels are used to treat dark under-eye circles. This involves exfoliating the thin skin of the lower eyelid to promote regeneration and lighten the dark circles.
Puffy under-eye circles
Puffy under-eye circles are generally caused by a number of factors:
- Water retention caused by excessive salt intake
- Fatigue
- Stress
- Sinus problems
- Allergies
All of these factors can cause swelling of the lower eyelids due to fat that does not break down.
In this case, there is no surgical procedure or non-invasive treatment available. Therefore, blepharoplasty must be performed.
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to correct drooping eyelids (which give the face an aged appearance)
Deep-set dark circles
Two main factors are responsible for deep-set dark circles:
Age: As we age, we lose fat and bone density around our eyes. The skin loses collagen and becomes thinner and more translucent, causing this hollow appearance
Fatigue: Poor-quality sleep or not getting enough sleep is a common problem that can take a toll on your physical health.
To address these deep-set dark circles, we recommend that you start by getting better sleep and drinking plenty of water. However, if the hollows persist, the My Laser team may use a filler such as hyaluronic acid injections. At our centers, the procedure takes between 15 and 30 minutes, and the results last 12 to 18 months.
