How does laser hair removal for the legs work?

The laser targets the melanin in the hair: its light is converted into heat and destroys the follicle without damaging the skin. On the legs, hair is often thick and deeply pigmented, making this an area that responds well to treatment, even though the larger surface area requires a longer session.

At My Laser, treatments are performed using two lasers: the 755 nm Alexandrite laser from the Cynosure Elite+ platform for fair skin (phototypes 1 through 3) and the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser for medium to dark skin (phototypes 4 through 6). Each machine is equipped with a Zimmer cold air blower that cools the skin throughout the laser treatment. The laser technician selects the wavelength and settings based on your skin type and hair color.

The laser treats only hairs in the growth phase, which is why an average of 5 to 6 sessions are required, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. You can treat your entire legs or just a portion of them:

  • Entire legs: thighs, knees, calves, and ankles
  • Lower legs, from the knee to the ankle, or thighs only
  • Thighs (lower half), for the area visible in shorts
  • Feet and toes, often included in the package

What happens during a laser hair removal session for the legs?

  1. Free Consultation

    A laser specialist will examine your skin and hair, check for any contraindications, determine your skin type, and work with you to decide on the number of sessions. This initial consultation is free, both in Casablanca and Tangier.

  2. Preparation

    Shave the area the day before your session. Throughout the treatment process, do not use wax, tweezers, or an electric epilator—these remove the hair that the laser is supposed to target. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanning products, and be sure to mention any photosensitizing treatments you are taking.

  3. The session

    You’ll wear protective eyewear, and then the practitioner will use either the Alexandrite or Nd:YAG laser, depending on your skin type. The Zimmer cold air blower continuously cools the treatment area. The procedure takes about 45 minutes for the legs.

  4. After the session

    A soothing cream is applied, and you can resume your normal activities right away. Avoid sun exposure for 3 weeks and apply sunscreen to exposed areas. The treated hairs will fall out on their own within 1 to 3 weeks.

  5. Upcoming Sessions

    The next session takes place 4 to 6 weeks later, for a total of 5 to 6 sessions. The first results are usually visible by the third session.

Contraindications and Possible Side Effects

Contraindications

  • Tanned skin or recent or planned sun exposure
  • Blonde, white, gray, or red hair: electrolysis takes over
  • Herpes outbreak in that area
  • Photosensitizing treatments: oral retinoids, St. John’s wort, certain antibiotics
  • Infection, disease, or skin lesion in the area
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
  • Photosensitizing cream or oil applied to the area

Possible Effects

  • Minor swelling around the hair follicles for a few hours: a sign that the laser has taken effect
  • Skin redness or sensitivity lasting 1 to 3 days
  • A sensation of warmth or tingling during the session, which is alleviated by cold air
  • Temporary itching, which subsides within a few days
  • More rarely, a superficial burn or change in skin color, especially if the skin is tanned: notify the center immediately
  • Your eyes are protected by goggles throughout the entire session
