Electrolysis: Permanent hair removal for blonde, white, gray, and red hair

Electrolysis is the only truly permanent hair removal technique recognized for ALL hair types, all colors, and all skin types. It complements laser hair removal by targeting hair that lasers cannot treat: blond, white, gray, and red hair, as well as fine vellus hair. At My Laser Casablanca and Tangier, our practitioners have been offering this technique for years with excellent results, particularly on the face, eyebrows, upper lip, and hormone-dependent areas.

What is permanent hair removal by electrolysis?

Permanent hair removal by electrolysis is the only technique recognized by medical authorities as 100% permanent. It involves inserting an extremely fine needle into the hair follicle and delivering a microcurrent that permanently destroys the germ cell at the root of the hair, thereby preventing any future regrowth.

Unlike laser treatment, which targets melanin (dark pigment), electrolysis is effective on all hair types, including white, gray, blond, and red hair, as well as fine vellus hair that laser treatment cannot target. At My Laser Maroc, we offer electrolysis at our centers in Casablanca and Tangier, as a complement to laser hair removal for complete permanent hair removal.

Electrolysis vs. laser hair removal: What's the difference?

Electrolysis and laser hair removal are two complementary techniques, not competing ones. Here are their key differences:

  • Biological target: The laser targets the melanin in the hair, while electrolysis directly destroys the hair follicle’s germ cell.
  • Types of hair treated: Laser treatment does not work on white, blond, or red hair, or on vellus hair (due to a lack of melanin); electrolysis treats all types of hair, regardless of color.
  • Speed: Laser treatment is fast for large areas (legs, back, bikini line, full body); electrolysis is precise and ideal for small areas (upper lip, chin, eyebrows, stray hairs).
  • Hair reduction rates: Electrolysis provides 100% permanent hair removal, hair by hair; laser treatment reduces hair growth by 85% to 95%.
  • Sessions: Electrolysis = multiple passes, with each hair treated once; Laser = 6 to 8 sessions on the same area.
  • Ideal applications: laser for quick, comprehensive hair removal; electrolysis to complete a laser treatment (for residual hair) or for skin types that the laser cannot treat effectively.

During your complimentary pre-treatment consultation, our team will determine the best technique (or optimal combination) for your specific needs. Learn more about permanent laser hair removal.

How an electrolysis session works

Anelectrolysis sessionat My Laser Maroc consists of several specific steps:

  1. Preliminary medical consultation (included): assessment of your skin type, hair type, and medical history. Determination of the treatment plan.
  2. Cleaning and disinfecting the treatment area.
  3. Insertion of a sterile, single-use needle into each hair follicle.
  4. Delivery of a microcurrent that destroys the hair follicle at the root of the hair.
  5. Gentle removal of loose hair.
  6. Soothe the skin with a special balm for reducing redness.

The sensation during the treatment is slightly prickly but well tolerated. Side effects are minor: mild redness lasting from a few hours to 24 hours, with no need to avoid social activities. A session lasts from 15 minutes (for small areas) to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

Results and number of sessions

Each hair treated with electrolysis is permanently destroyed. However, hair follicles have growth cycles (anagen, catagen, and telogen phases), and not all hairs are visible on the surface at the same time. Therefore, multiple sessions are required to treat all the hairs:

  • Small facial areas (upper lip, chin, between the eyebrows): 4 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.
  • Medium areas: 8 to 12 sessions, depending on density.
  • Residual hair after laser treatment (finishing): 1 to 3 finishing sessions.

The results are 100% permanent for each treated hair. New hair growth may occur due to hormonal changes (puberty, pregnancy, menopause, hormone therapy, stress)—this is not a failure of the treatment but rather new hair growth caused by hormones.

Side effects and contraindications

Electrolysis is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced practitioner. Side effects are rare, minor, and temporary:

  • Mild redness or swelling in the treated area, which subsides within a few hours.
  • In rare cases: small scabs or slight changes in skin color, which are temporary and resolve on their own.
  • Very rarely: infection if post-treatment hygiene instructions are not followed.

Contraindications to be assessed during the consultation:

  • Pregnancy (as a precaution, it is recommended to postpone until after childbirth).
  • People with pacemakers, cardiac stimulators, or defibrillators.
  • Active skin infection (herpes, folliculitis) in the area.
  • Uncontrolled bleeding disorders or recent anticoagulant therapy.
  • Severe wound-healing disorders (history of keloid scars).
  • Known allergy to metals (certain needles).

It is essential to disclose any specific medical conditions during the initial consultation so that the treatment plan can be adjusted accordingly.

The technician who treated me is friendly, thorough, and inspires confidence. She takes all necessary hygiene precautions: mask, gloves, protective goggles; she cleans the skin thoroughly and then applies a cream afterward.
